Chief Underwriting Officer

Job description:
Reporting to the CEO, core duties will include the
following:
Analyse, evaluate and make underwriting decisions in line
with underwriting guidelines and recommendations, coordinating with analysts
and other underwriting staff;
In conjunction with the CEO, define underwriting strategy
and recommend business plans that will generate continued profitable business
growth in current and future markets;
Review and analyse new insurance applications for risk
exposure and compliance with underwriting guidelines;
Meet and negotiate with clients and brokers to build
relationships and to develop new and renewal business;
Responsible for the negotiation of reinsurance treaties and
facultative reinsurance placements;
Review contract wordings and act as signatory of insurance
contracts;
Review, evaluate and report on loss activity;
Manage, train and appraise junior members of staff to
enhance the underwriting skills within the underwriting team;
Responsible for underwriting document filings, accuracy of
data entries to systems and contract integrity for accounts underwritten;
Contribute to strategic planning and to overall management
of the company;
Assist the CEO in establishing operational structures;
Establish appropriate internal underwriting procedures and
criteria to control risk;
Oversee the development of the company’s underwriting
systems.
Qualifications, skills and experience
A minimum of 10 years’ underwriting experience, with
in-depth knowledge of the African insurance markets;
Demonstrable track record of profitable transactions and
generating business growth;
Demonstrable experience in writing and executing
underwriting business plans;
Experience in structuring and purchasing reinsurance
protections will be highly desirable;
Strong analytic skills and numerical aptitude will be
essential;
Broad operational skills and experience in an underwriting
environment, including budgetary management, financial management, claims,
resource allocation;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both
English and French, together with the ability to work well in a small team
environment;
Strong reinsurance relationships, allied to the credibility
to promote and represent Our Client Congo at senior management levels, will be required.
